Let’s start this article by getting that information out of the way right now: There is no confirmed return date just yet, but it should come a little bit later this year. What’s a little more interesting to us, at least at the moment, is starting to slowly watch Netflix morph into something that they originally tried to differentiate themselves from: Other networks. Rather than giving you the entirety of a season all at once, they are now breaking it down into halves. They’ve been doing this for a while with Full House and now, they are also doing this with Arrested Development and now also the Ellie Kemper series at the same time.
Why is Netflix doing this more with their comedy series? You can easily make the argument that it’s a move to ensure that their subscribers stick around longer, and we do think that this is a part of it. Yet, there are also so many people at this point who just subscribe to Netflix year-round that it really doesn’t matter as much as it would if this was a different streaming service. We just think that this is a way for Netflix to constantly have more shows that people are excited to see more of — in this case, we’re specifically talking about one that has a devoted following and one that is a little bit of a light in a dark time. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is one of Netflix’s most-lighthearted shows and is also one that has been especially popular for some time. It feels like the series is getting close to nearing its end but, before we get around to that, obviously Netflix wants to milk the property for everything that they can. Why wouldn’t they?

Update: Executive producer Robert Carlock is now saying, via THR, that the final episodes could launch later than expected — think 2019. It’s a long wait coming up!
Update 2: Netflix has now confirmed a January 25, 2019 return date.
