Is an Arrested Development season 6 really altogether possible?
For the time being, it doesn’t seem altogether likely — and for a wide array of different reasons. The obvious elephant in the room at the moment is the giant mass of stories surrounding Jeffrey Tambor, including the recent interview in which many of his co-stars stood up for him and seemed to shun and mistreat Jessica Walter in a terrible way. Many of them have apologized for their behavior but even still, we’re not sure that any of this is going to be something that the series escapes anytime soon. While it is true that most of these headlines first began courtesy of another show Tambor was on in Transparent, they eventually transferred over here once news circulated of a nasty verbal attack that Tambor unleashed on Walter during filming. (Arrested Development season 5 had already filmed at the time in which it was revealed that Transparent would move forward without Tambor.)
Even if none of the Tambor controversy ever happened, we still don’t think that it would have been a slam dunk that the series was coming back for more episodes. After all, just look at things this way: The critical reception to the show this time around has been mixed and, to go along with it, there is almost always a challenge getting this entire group together. Jason Bateman now has Ozark, Tony Hale is now a part of Veep, and David Cross is often doing a wide array of different projects. Schedule-wise, it’s difficult to see where things could go from here.
When season 5 premieres on Netflix this Tuesday, be prepared to see a batch of episodes followed by what is likely to be a hiatus. The second half of the season will be available a little later in the year.
