The Timeless season 3 campaign wages on; our Friday fears

Timeless season 3

It’s been a good five days now since the Timeless season 2 finale and alas, there is still no firm decision on the future of the show.

What is NBC really waiting on at this point? That’s really a good question, given that it seems as this point like they are splitting hairs over DVR viewership, scheduling, and some other complications. While we understand that the business end of things when it comes to renewing a show may make this far more complicated than any of us would first imagine, eventually you do come to a point where you either renew a show or you don’t. (Or, in the case of Timeless last year, you cancel it only to then renew it again later.) It’s a complex series of events leading to a black-and-white answer.

If Timeless is renewed today leading into the weekend, it’ll be a thrill; however, we’re very fearful about any news coming out on Friday since Fridays rarely bring great news.

There is a reason that we refer to the Friday before upfronts (otherwise known as last Friday) as “Bloody Friday” — it’s when networks opt to make the majority of their renewals / cancellations official. Why on Friday? The simple answer is that with many news organizations taking off for the weekend soon, they can bury the cancellations in the news cycle. They disappear over Saturday and Sunday so by the time that Monday rolls around, many have moved on to other topics. (We also suspect that networks announced bad news on Fridays so they can go home and then not have to deal with the backlash from fans.)

We understand that canceling shows is not something executives take some pleasure in — not only are you angering fans, but you are effectively telling employees that they no longer have jobs anymore. That’s a terrible thing to have to do.

The one thing we can say about the Timeless renewal effort is this: On some level, NBC wants to keep the show. They would’ve canceled it already otherwise. The issue at hand may just be whether or not it is viable for them to do so, whether it be financially or logistically. Do your best to keep fighting the good fight, and also helping to promise that you’ll do what you can to get more people watching the show. At this point, supporting the business end of the show is more valuable than anything.
