The X-Files alum Gillian Anderson joins Netflix’s ‘Sex Education’

Following her turn on The X-Files as Dana Scully, Gillian Anderson is officially heading over to Netflix.

Per the tweet below, Anderson (whose credits also include The Fall and Hannibal) is set to join the upcoming series “Sex Education,” where she will play the part of “an uninhibited sex therapist”; meanwhile, Asa Butterfield is set to appear as “her son, a socially awkward virgin who sets up an underground sex therapy clinic at his high school.”

This series is described as a dramedy so with that in mind, there are going to be some moments in here worthy of laughter. The series is set to premiere at some point in 2019.

We know that earlier this year, there were some serious questions floating around out there regarding the future of Anderson, given the fact that she had decided to depart The X-Files before it was even known if it was coming back for a season 12. (Based on what Fox said earlier this week at upfronts, another season now seems unlikely.) Meanwhile, she has also recently departed another series in American Gods over at Starz. She’s always been a performer who wants to test herself and try out some new horizons, and this latest gig could be a rather fine example of what she wants to do next.

Hopefully, this particular series gives us a great opportunity to see Anderson tackling some different sort of material; obviously, it’s too early to gauge the overall quality of this show without seeing a trailer or anything else. As of right now, the only thing we have an indicator of here is that Netflix is continuing to try out some bold material that will test audiences in a way that network TV does not. That’s one of the real reasons why some of this content is appealing to actors — it’s a medium that they haven’t had a chance to explore until recently.
