Ink Master: Angels review: Did Don Hawkins defeat Duffy Fortner?
The setting this time for Albuquerque, and what we had in the end here was an interesting face-off between Duffy and a black-and-gray specialist in Don Hawkins who absolutely has a lot of talent and ambition. He’s someone who clearly enters his tattoos wanting to create one of the greatest things possible. In terms of mainstream success, he’s probably going to find a good bit of it and he deserved to be a face-off.
Whenever we write like this, though, it’s always pretty clear that there is going to be a “but.” In this case, the biggest thing that is holding Don back is just that he still does need to figure out the right moments in which to rein himself in. He’s at times too ambitious for his own good and that hurt him a little bit. He’s a prime example of one of those people we really do what to see back in the Ink Master world in the future because he’s probably going to learn a lot from his experience.
Also, we like Don just because he’s got the sort of story that will be memorable even years down the road. While there are many pro athletes out there who often get a number of tattoos, we don’t hear as much about athletes-turned-artists. Art was always in Don’s blood so he just went this direction the moment that he stopped playing.
CarterMatt Verdict
Overall we would say that Ink Master: Angels on Tuesday night delivered in terms of creativity and giving us a chance to see interesting artists — the three who faced off were some of the more unique ones we’ve seen so far this season. Unfortunately, we are still waiting somewhat to see another great contender make it to season 11.
