The Brooklyn Nine-Nine season 6 renewal debate may be Fox’s toughest
Let’s start with this: Brooklyn Nine-Nine has always been a very funny show with some quality hijinks, great guest stars, and some of the sharpest writing out there. Yet, the pass two seasons have been nothing short of magic, the right mixture of comedy, drama, and heart that other shows of this nature can only hope to achieve. It’s one of those shows you wish was more than an hour long a week, or that you had 52 episodes a year even if it would exhaust the cast beyond the point of comprehension.
Ultimately, we just wish that somewhere along the way the past two years, someone got the memo as to how good the series has become. It’s went from a very good comedy to essential viewing, but unfortunately it’s now firmly on the bubble. Its live ratings at the moment are far from great — think in terms of a 0.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic. Yet, critical acclaim has never been better! If Fox cancels it, they may be able to replace it with one that gets better numbers — they are developing some projects and, to go along with that, there are those reports at the moment that Last Man Standing could be coming over to Fox after spending years on ABC. Yet, if Fox does cancel it are they going to be able to replace it with a show anywhere near as good? They have a hard time convincing us of that.
The other thing that makes this renewal situation so tough is that if Brooklyn Nine-Nine is renewed, it means there is one less spot for another good show — think The Last Man on Earth, another bubble series that is in a tight bind. The Mick is right there, too. New Girl is already ending, but we could see someone in the group of Last Man on Earth / The Mick / Ghosted / Brooklyn Nine-Nine heading off to the TV graveyard. We like many of these shows, but Brooklyn is still at the top of our list. It’s a comedy that could be considered gone-too-soon if canceled this year … and we say that knowing that it’s had five seasons.
