McMafia season 2 renewal official over at AMC, BBC One
Today, it was confirmed that the British crime drama, which stars James Norton as a man in Alex Godman who found himself increasingly immersed in the world of organized crime, will be coming back for another batch of episodes.
Given some of the ratings for the series in America, this is not admittedly a renewal we considered to be a sure thing — yet, it was enormously successful over in the UK and we do think that there is more potential for expansion elsewhere. Norton’s star continues to be on the rise and this is a series that can hopefully find some more attention and success on AMC’s streaming and On-Demand platforms. Norton also has a chance of pulling in an Emmy nomination and we really hope this brings some more attention to the show as a whole. We certainly do think that when it comes to relevance alone, McMafia is doing something that will certainly be in demand in the years to come — smart, suspenseful political drama that looks at the relationships between countries, individuals, and powerful people in Russia.
In a statement, show executive producers Hossein Amini and James Watkins had the following to say:
“We are so thrilled with how McMafia has resonated with audiences across the world and are delighted to be given the opportunity to cast more light on the shady intersections of transnational criminals and their enablers in finance, law, intelligence agencies and even in governments.”
Meanwhile, BBC’s Controller of Drama Piers Wenger added the following:
“McMafia’s blend of topicality and killer storytelling struck a chord with audiences and significantly added to the discourse around Anglo-Russian relations and we are excited to be returning to that world in the safe and brilliant hands of James and Hoss for series two.”
