Instinct episode 5 review: A Jane Doe case and a secret
The case began with the death of a young woman who turned out to be a Jane Doe. Yet, she looked very much like a wealthy woman named Maggie and for the start of the case, what we saw with Dylan and Lizzie was the two of them operating thinking as though it was her who died. That didn’t turn out to be the case, but there was still the question as to whether or not anyone killed the Jane Doe thinking it was Maggie.
What made the case interesting to watch was simply seeing the crossing off of various people on the list, only to then circle back to some of them down the line. Take, for example, Maggie’s father Frank — while he wasn’t a suspect himself, it just so turned out that he had a “charity” that he was using in order to trade organs on the black market. Basically, he was secretly selling organs on the black market and when a prominent sushi chef was screwed over in an auction, he tried to get revenge on Maggie’s father by going after her — or who he at least thought was her. This was a case of revenge and the Jane Doe was an innocent bystander in all of this. The same goes for Maggie.
As for elsewhere…
We did see a little more coaxing on the part of Julian to try to get Julian back into the CIA. Also, Andy does have concerns when it comes to Dylan’s ability to turn things off, as well. They hit a temporary roadblock in their relationship tonight but they are a stable couple — with that in mind, they’re probably never going to be in serious danger.

CarterMatt Verdict
Overall, Instinct episode 5 was an episode that had a lot of good content into it, including some funny back and forth between Lizzie and Dylan over his attempts to proclaim himself to be a cop. While we’re not exactly going to say that the series is doing all that much to reinvent the genre, it is presenting compelling, interesting cases that keep you guessing.
Also, at the end of tonight’s episode we got a reminder that Lizzie knows how to have a little bit of fun when it comes to messing with some of her other colleagues in the NYPD. It’s pretty clear that working with Dylan at the moment is getting her back on her feet as an even better cop than before.
