Ash vs. Evil Dead canceled at Starz; no season 4 planned

Starz -

Alas, the journey of Ash vs. Evil Dead is coming to an end a little bit earlier than some out there probably would’ve wanted. The series, which is of course based on the Sam Raimi movies, has been officially canceled at Starz after three seasons on the air.

Is this news sad? Absolutely so, but there is also a part of it that feels like a victory. Consider things from this vantage point — this is a franchise that started from the humblest of beginnings and with a movie that was low-budget, defied the odds, and stood the test of team. Getting three seasons’ worth of television to go along with the movies has to be a dream come true for many people and it certainly seems to be for star Bruce Campbell.

In a statement today confirming the news, the actor/executive producer had the following to say:

Ash vs Evil Dead has been the ride of a lifetime … Ash Williams was the role of a lifetime. It was an honor to reunite with Evil Dead partners Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi to give our tireless fans another taste of the outrageous horror/comedy they demanded. I will always be grateful to Starz for the opportunity to revisit the franchise that launched our careers.”

The Ash vs. Evil Dead finale airs later this month on Starz and it now serves as the official series finale. Hopefully, that offers enough closure to satisfy some long-term fans, but with this franchise it’s also easy to adopt a never-say-never philosophy in regards to the future. It definitely still feels like there are a number of different avenues that can be taken to either make this franchise work elsewhere or to just do something similar with the same sort of people on board.

For now, though, we usher this series off into the TV sunset.
