NCIS season 16: What’s next after official renewal?

NCIS

Earlier today, the official news was announced when it comes to NCIS — it’s coming back for a 16th season! Mark Harmon has signed a new contract, and as is often the case, that basically led to CBS making the announcement official. This season will certainly feel strange, given the fact that this is the first one without Pauley Perrette as a main part of the cast. Yet, the show is clearly going on.

So what are some of the next boxes that need to be checked in order to make the puzzle complete for NCIS next season? There are a few different things to consider here.

1. Re-signing other long-term cast members – Whether it be Sean Murray, David McCallum or others, there are some other contracts that the series may need to figure out, provided that they have not done that already. Given that we are losing Perrette already, we don’t want to lose anyone else — though it’s possible that we could see McCallum return with a smaller episode count as he did this season.

2. Making sure the rest of the cast is locked in – Maria Bello’s deal (Jack Sloane) has her returning, whereas the deals for some of the other, newer cast members are a little more mysterious. Hopefully, the show can lock them in plus also who could end up being the replacement for Abby down the road. It’s possible we’ve already met said replacement but time will tell when the network starts to make some of those official announcements.

3. Figuring out what the story is – This is something that some of the showrunners have probably already been thinking about, but the writers room will open and really get going in the months ahead. We do think that this is probably the best NCIS season of the past few years; with that, we do have some reasonably-high hopes leading into season 16.
