CBS Renewal Hopes: NCIS, Scorpion, Madam Secretary, Hawaii Five-0, & more
All three NCIS shows – There’s very little reason to worry about any of them since more than likely, they’re all coming back. There may be contractual stuff to work out at some places in the franchise, but these are all highly-rated shows. NCIS: New Orleans has reportedly already set production dates indicating that it will be back. Maybe there’s a tiny cause for concern with NCIS: Los Angeles, but it’s hard to imagine CBS canceling what is their #1 Sunday show through the network’s own fault for giving it a brutal timeslot this season.
Scorpion – There is a genuine reason to worry here. The future of this show is likely going to come down to DVR sales, streams, and viability all over the world. It’s one of the lowest-rated dramas CBS has on the air from Monday through Friday.
Bull – It’s a lock to come back. No cause for concern here.
Criminal Minds – Like with NCIS: New Orleans, there are production dates already set. It may be one of the last shows to be renewed due in part to negotiations with ABC Studios, but we more than expect it to come back.
SEAL Team / SWAT – They’ve already been renewed. Nothing to see here.
Hawaii Five-0 and Blue Bloods – There may be some contract negotiations, but we more than expect the two series to return.
MacGyver – It may not be a sure thing as CBS’ lowest-rated Friday show, but we do think that it’s performed well enough to secure a season 3 without too much effort. The only question we have is if it could be on the move elsewhere due to Magnum PI being a likely pickup. With its Hawaii setting it feels like a perfect compliment to Hawaii Five-0.
Instinct – It’s probably too early to tell, but if it continues to pull a 0.6 rating like it did earlier this month, signs point to it not returning. If it performs like it did the first two weeks, signs point to it coming back.
Ransom – It all depends on Saturday expectations.
Elementary and Code Black – We’re not super-optimistic, but neither has actually premiered as of yet, so we need to see the ratings for the new seasons before casting out an educated guess.
Madam Secretary – It’s a toss-up, but we’re cautiously hopeful that the terrible timeslot it’s in will give CBS something to think about here — with the same going for some of its off-network syndication. It has a chance to make money in many different ways.
