Mozart in the Jungle canceled at Amazon; no season 5 coming

Mozart in the Jungle renewed

Consider this to be one of the bigger surprises of the week — Mozart in the Jungle has been formally canceled at Amazon after four seasons.

In a statement (per The Hollywood Reporter) confirming the news, show executive producers Paul Weitz, Roman Coppola, Jason Schwartzman, and Will Graham had the following to say:

“We are so proud of the four seasons we made of this show and are grateful to the cast, crew, fans and Amazon for writing this symphony with us. We hope people will keep finding the show for years to come.”

Why cancel this show now without giving it much of a proper final season? We would chart most of that back to the programming changes at the top for Amazon. Jennifer Salke is now on board running the provider’s original content, and with that, she seems to have a new focus: Moving over to more ambitious, epic programming. Amazon at the moment seems to be fairly intent on getting the next Game of Thrones or Stranger Things, the sort of big, broad programming that can get them a ton of money and recognition. While Mozart in the Jungle received a lot of awards attention, that didn’t necessarily amount to huge ratings. Amazon doesn’t publicly reveal ratings, but you do have to assume that the numbers weren’t such that this show was a huge hit for them. Otherwise, we’d be getting word on a season 5 renewal.

While we’re not altogether sure that a Mozart in the Jungle season 5 is going to happen anywhere else, the best thing we can hope for is that some other network/streaming service finds a way in order to continue the tradition of what Amazon once had: Smart, interesting programming that appealed to a specific market.
