How American Gods season 2 is replacing Gillian Anderson

American Gods season 2 premiere date

When it comes to American Gods season 2 and trying to replace Gillian Anderson’s character of Media, the producers behind the scenes of the series have realized that there is no direct substitute. With that, they are going in a different direction with this important member of the New Gods.

According to a new report coming in via TVLine, the Starz series is looking for a new series regular to play New Media, someone who has dominion over social media and other aspects of technology much in the same way that Media herself looked over television and film. Producers are currently looking for an Asian actress in her twenties for the role — though we suppose that there is probably some flexibility given the fact that Media herself was so interchangeable in the first place. While all of the various parts in season 1 were played by Anderson, we saw her wear effectively a series of different skins and play different variations of famous characters. It’s one of the things that made her role so unique in the first place.

Anderson’s departure was announced at around the same time that original showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green departed the series, which is about as ambitious as any that is out there within the cable TV world. This is a busy year for Gillian departing shows, as she also is choosing to leave The X-Files following the recent conclusion of season 11. The future of that series is currently up in the air.

Other things to know about American Gods season 2

Series author Neil Gaiman is going to have even more of a hands-on role than before and filming is apparently set to begin next month. Any show that is trying to replace Fuller (one of the biggest visionaries out there in the TV world) is facing a rather daunting challenge — he’s beloved for a reason. Yet, Gaiman’s source material is fantastic and this is a story that is creative and inventive enough to withstand some of the tests that are thrown at it.

The unfortunate thing here is that when you consider the amount of post-production that could be required for a show like this, it’s certainly possible that we could be waiting until either late 2018 or early-to-mid 2019 in order to see it. Part of the wait could just be finding the right time to air the show. Starz seemingly has the fall filled up with Outlander while Counterpart is currently perched within the winter months. They may need to double up on shows in order to make it happen.
