The Resident episode 8 review: A different sort of ‘Family Affair’

The Resident episode 8

The Resident episode 8 carried with it the title of “Family Affair” and from start to finish, there was a lot of intrigued from a medicine point of you. There was a mysteries Jane Doe who had a disease difficult to diagnose, you saw Devon’s parents arrive on the seen for the first time, and Dr. Okafor had to face a really difficult decision when it comes to whether or not she would date a patient that has a very clear interest in her.

The longer this episode went along, the more that these cases built. For example, we learned a little bit more about Devon’s father, including that he speaks three languages, he has tremendous guts, and he is beneath anyone no matter what his job is. This was great (especially Devon apologizing for his previous actions at the dinner), and as was seeing more of Conrad and Nic working together at the hospital. It may not be enough to turn the two into a couple down the road but it’s a nice start.

When it comes to getting to know more about the core group of characters at the heart of the show, this episode absolutely provided some great opportunities. Yet, there was still something lacking to a certain extent about “Family Affair” and much of that started with the momentum of some of the biggest storylines of the season. We’re speaking here specifically about Dr. Bell’s tremor and the quest to stop Lane from doing her dangerous chemotherapy work for the sake of the bottom line. There actually wasn’t all that much progress on either one of these stories. Why was that? Much of it seems to have to do with this episode actually airing out of order from when it was shot. This was written almost as a plug-in episode that could air at any point in the season. It was compelling from a character standpoint, but left something to be desired when it comes to the plot.

CarterMatt Verdict

Like many other recent episodes, The Resident delivered on showcasing some complicated medical procedures and interesting character dynamics. We just wish that it did something more when it comes to the stories we’ve been following much of the season. That momentum was one of the things that really started to get us hooked on the series in the first place.
