Deception episode 2 review: Black fights to be an official consultant to FBI

Tonight’s episode of Deception started with a man taking his morning jog through New York when a young man approached him with a water gun and sprayed it in his face. Following that, he died from an unknown poison.

We flash to Cameron Black who is pitching his skills and team to the FBI in order to help them solve their cases in exchange that they help with his brother’s case. While the FBI hasn’t officially made him a consultant, Black shows up at the crime scene in attempt to help. Agent Kay Daniels is annoyed by Black’s presence, but eventually convinces them to let him stay after he tells them the killer was performing. It’s an interesting concept how this show incorporates magic and illusion into crime cases. it keeps us entertained.

This leads the team to the apartment of a young boy who throw paper airplanes out the window and to the crew who’s behind it. In addition, the young man who sprayed the first victim was tricked into thinking it was a game show. Thus killing the man who was jogging. Again, this crime made us want more. Another obvious aspect of the show is that we can definitely see a structure forming. We can see that it will be a case-of-the-week format along with trying to figure out who framed Black’s brother, Johnny. This is what we can expect going forward with the occasional interruption for a more untraditional episode, such as a two parter or a flash-forward, etc.

As the episode continues, Agent Daniels and Black follow leads to the Russian mob and their fake reality show they are staging as in order to get tourist to kill people. Back at Black’s team’s home base, the team puts together what they know to fill in the gaps. Together, the team sneaks their way into a club where a shootout takes place and where Black’s grabs the real killer’s phone. This is where the team starts to put together one of their illusion sets that will bring Black’s trick to life.

The stunt included making it seem like the real killer was poisoned by staging a hospital forcing him to give the FBI the antidote along with the leader of the Russian mob. It was a great illusion and we enjoyed watching how it all played out. In the end, the FBI is making Black’s team, Deception, a official consultant. In addition, Kay reveals she has been secretly investigating Johnny’s innocence.

So far, the new series is coming into its own. Hopefully the series will continue to steer away from previous shows like it and make itself stand out.
