Doctor Who alum Michelle Gomez joins Netflix’s Sabrina series
Per a report from Deadline, Gomez is taking on the role of Mary Wardell, described as “Sabrina’s favorite teacher and mentor at Baxter High. When she is possessed by the devil’s handmaiden, Madam Satan, Ms. Wardell turns into a sultry, cunning manipulator, always trying to lure Sabrina down the Path of Night.” It’s hard to imagine a better casting for this role than Gomez, who alternates masterfully (pun intended) between humor and darkness in her Doctor Who role. She should fit right in with this series’ darker tone — we know that it’s going to be a very different series than Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, but we definitely still imagine that there will be a little bit of humor sprinkled in here and there.
Netflix already handed down a two-season order to this project, which comes via Riverdale executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. The original plan was to have this be a Riverdale companion series / possible spin-off on The CW, but then Netflix made an offer to Warner Bros. that offered so much more security — basically, there was no way for the producers to refuse that. Given that Netflix is the official home for Riverdale in many territories outside of America, we already do wonder how these two shows will mingle with one another.
If you missed it, Netflix and the studio have already found the perfect person to play Sabrina in Mad Men alum Kiernan Shipka. Everything about this show to date sounds excellent — there is no guarantee that it will be, but you’ve got a lot to be excited about if you love the comics and some of the people who are set to take part at present.
Once there is more news, we’ll be sure to let you know.
