Victoria season 2 episode 4 (PBS) preview: The Queen & the Great Famine

Victoria season 2 episode 4

Why do they call the Great Famine great? Was there no better adjective that they could have used. We know that there are probably many more important questions to ponder over as we look ahead to Victoria season 2 episode 4, but this is nonetheless still one that we have in a historical sense.

The more important thing in regards to this episode that it tests the Queen’s ability to handle decisions on several different levels. Should she really put her all into helping the Irish? Even if it comes at the potential expense of the English? This is one question that she will be forced to tackle, mostly because many people close to her are not going to be in complete agreement with this opinion. For the record, the idea that some people would be so absolutely against helping famine victims is appalling.

The Victoria season 2 episode 4 synopsis below gives you a little more details on the subject:

News of the horrific famine in Ireland has finally reached the Queen. She is adamant that her government should be doing more to help, but meets with surprising opposition from her Prime Minister.

Throughout this episode anticipate a number of questions about the Queen’s capacity to lead plus some underlying sexism when it comes to that. One of the most terrible things about society, and this is something that exists in the modern day, is the assumption that somehow compassion is some terrible thing that we don’t want. On the contrary. We should all cherish and celebrate compassion, mostly because of the fact that there is so little of it in the world right now. While there is a certain fiscal responsibility that comes with ruling the country, it’s a little oxymoronic for the Royal Family to turn up their noses at helping the Irish in need while also living in an exquisite palace with all of the riches in the world.
