New Doctor Who star Jodie Whittaker demanded equal pay & got it
According to Digital Spy, Whittaker was determined to get the same pay as her Doctor Who predecessor Peter Capaldi and spoke at the National Television Awards about the pay gap.
“It’s an incredibly important time and the notion [of equal pay] should be supported. It’s a bit of a shock that it’s a surprise to everyone that it should be supported! I know I do not speak just on behalf of the women here, I speak on behalf of the men and the women.”
It was a big victory for women and Whittaker is certainly a role model to all the young and inspiring actresses out there. It’s also a step in the right direction. Whittaker is the first female star of Doctor Who, after all, and add that to the fact that she will get paid the same as a man who played the same character as her is actually the direction the women’s movement wants.
There are many women in the industry not getting paid the same as their fellow male colleagues and who aren’t getting anywhere with their determination. For example, Catt Sadler left E! News after finding out her male c0-host was being paid significantly more than her. Sadler asked for what she deserved but was denied repeatedly; when that didn’t happen, she quit.
Times are definitely changing and many are now refusing to be quiet about it. Many actresses are taking every opportunity to speak up about many issues, not just the pay gap. They are calling producers, networks, and other actors out for any injustices committed by these people. This includes the #MeToo Movement, which made its big stand at this year’s Golden Globes and was a huge success in getting their message known.
Overall, we are super excited to hear that Jodie Whittaker’s fight for equal pay was success. In addition, we are very much looking forward to seeing her as the new star of Doctor Who. We have no doubt Whittaker will do a fantastic job during the series’s 11th season.
Doctor Who will return for its 11th season later this year on the BBC. For more news regarding Doctor Who, be sure to visit this link.
