Outlander season 4 photo: First look at Caitriona Balfe, Sam Heughan

Starz is clearly in the mood to give us some great favors today — after all, we’ve got a first-look Outlander season 4 photo featuring Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan. You can view this photo above, and it features Claire and Jamie Fraser getting their fresh start in America — with apparently the help of a horse.

From the way that the two are situated atop the carriage, does anyone else perceive them as people in a hurry? Are they rushing to get somewhere, or get away from somewhere? Both are worthy questions, as is how they managed to get in possession of a horse in the first place. Jamie and Claire are people who are effectively, starting from nothing. They are the victims of shipwreck and they find themselves in a new world separate from Scotland, which they called home for so long. While Claire has been there before — she lived in Boston for decades — it’s a little bit different for Jamie. This is uncharted territory and they’re going to need to make some friends.

Given that Jamie’s Aunt Jocasta does live there, could that be someone who helps them to make their American Dream into a reality? They just want a happy life where they can be together, and in America they may have that  opportunity… or so they think. While Jamie and Claire love each other, they are also very much aware of the fact that there is trouble around almost every corner for the two of them. No matter where they go, there is going to be a problem that they run into. They just have to face it head-on and rely on each other to get through it.

One thing beyond the costuming and the aforementioned horse, this photo gives you a good sense of the forested backdrop. Even though production may remain in Scotland for the fourth season, it’s already very clear that the show is looking at a different palette and is going to make this show into North Carolina and the surrounding region as best as they possibly can. There are times in which that could be challenging, but they are off to a good start.

Outlander season 4 premieres on Starz later this year. Hopefully, this image just scratches the surface of all of the great stuff that the network has planned over the course of the weeks ahead to help get everyone excited about the show and help us all through this Droughtlander.
