CarterMatt Awards 2017 results: The winner of Best New Show is…
Welcome to the CarterMatt Awards results! Throughout the final days of December we’re going to be sharing with you the end results of one of the greatest editions of these awards ever since we first started them six years ago. Hundreds of thousands of you voted, making this edition incredibly competitive and also a total blast to conduct. We hope that some of your favorites end up being among the winners this year!
Best New Show is the category we are looking at today, and it’s once again one that we really enjoy doing! There are often so many new shows that come out over the year that many of them can be forgotten about or lost; this is a way to help reminisce over much of the great new programming that entered our lives in a calendar year. Some shows make you laugh, some are fiercely dramatic, and above all else all of them remind you as to why you watch and love TV in the first place. You’re exploring new worlds on a weekly basis.
We like to think that these shows set the standard for some more great series in 2018 — as a matter of fact, we did recently publish a list of some of the new shows we’re most excited to see!
Now, let’s get to sharing who was the ultimate champion of 2017 in this category…
The Sinner wins Best New Show
The limited series aired this past summer and starred Jessica Biel as Cora, a woman and young mother struggling to come to grips with a murder she suddenly committed out of nowhere one day at the beach. The entire story unfolded in a way in which you knew who the murderer was, but you didn’t quite understand why. Add to this Bill Pullman and Christopher Abbott and you had a great cast anchoring one of the best mysteries of the year.
With almost 70% of the vote there really wasn’t all that much in the way of competition here for The Sinner to roll right through on its way to getting this title. (Riverdale and The Good Doctor each posted nearly 10% in their own right.) Even with this win you can still make the argument that The Sinner is underrated — it aired on a network in USA that doesn’t often get enough credit for its shows, and beyond that it also aired at a time in the summer when viewers are distracted by other things. We hope to see nominations for this show at the Emmys in several categories, just as we hope that Biel and the whole creative team are able to come up with another concept that really works. Bring back many of the same cast members if you can and tell a new story worthy of as much discussion and debate as this one.
The Sinner is an excellent choice, and we applaud our readers for going in this direction!
