Shemar Moore’s SWAT ties another ratings high; Young Sheldon slips
Overall, Thursday night’s new episode of the series drew in total a 1.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic, which is the same rating that it had for its premiere episode in November and then also the same rating that it drew for its Thanksgiving Day episode. What’s interesting about this show is that it seems to be fairly unfazed airing on nights when there is not a lot of substantial competition elsewhere — it seems to have no issue at all when it comes to weathering those holiday storms. That’s important for the long-term future of SWAT showing that it’s reasonably independent of what airs before it on the network. If it can succeed in almost any environment then there’s a reasonably good chance that it will keep its audience from the end of the first season to the start of the second one.
At the moment there is no SWAT season 2 renewal, but we’re starting to get all the more optimistic that this is going to be something formally announced in due time.
As for some other ratings analysis … If you love another CBS show in Young Sheldon the news here is a little more bittersweet. While Thursday night’s new episode drew the #1 rating of the night in a 1.7, this does mark the lowest rating for the prequel series so far this season. While there is a pretty reasonable explanation for the ratings downturn (having no Big Bang Theory lead-in will do that to you) we cannot ignore the fact that this is one of the bigger success stories of the fall season. It’s going to be fine; it’s even more of a lock for a season 2 renewal than SWAT is.
Overall, CBS probably didn’t make too big of a mistake airing new programming on Thursday night. Their ratings were solid enough to overcome any issues that came along with airing so close to the holidays.
