Mr. Robot season 4 renewal official at USA
On Wednesday morning, USA Network confirmed that they are bringing back the Rami Malek series, created by Sam Esmail, for a fourth season. It was Esmail himself who confirmed the news, saying that the writers room for the latest batch of new episodes is open.
There have been questions for a little while about the future of the series — Malek and the show itself have been snubbed at many of the major awards shows this year after Mr. Robot was previously an awards-show darling. Meanwhile, the ratings for this series are down more than 20% in most live+same-day metrics in comparison to season 2. We’re not altogether shocked by that, though, for a number of reasons, including the fact that Mr. Robot moved from summer to fall for the third season and that is an infinitely more competitive space for the show to be in. Also, we’re not shocked by the renewal — while Mr. Robot may not be the highest-rated show on its network it is still getting more critical buzz and awards consideration than most of the others. (If only USA could monetize some of the millions of people who pirate this show — which is, of course, rather ironic given the subject matter of the show itself.)
As for what the Mr. Robot season 4 premiere date could be we’re hoping that it will air at some point in either late 2018 or early 2019. This is a series that does take time to get together, in part because Esmail is so hands-on with the entire process including directing. He has called for more time between seasons in the past, and we don’t exactly think that the folks at USA want to rush quality. Malek has been busy as of late playing Freddie Mercury in a biopic that was at one point directed by Bryan Singer (we’ll see what happens with that project), but he’ll be around at some point next year to continue filming this show again.
For now, rejoice! You’re not done seeing Elliot Alderson on TV for the time being.
