Absentia Canadian premiere date confirmed at Showcase
In a press release today, the network announced that on Sunday, January 21 at 9:00 p.m. Eastern time, Absentia season 1 will officially kick off. If for whatever reason you haven’t read much about the show just yet, the official synopsis below gives you a sense of it:
Starring and executive produced by Canadian Stana Katic (Castle), all-new drama series Absentia centres on FBI agent Emily Byrne (Katic). While hunting one of Boston’s most notorious serial killers, Emily disappears without a trace and is declared dead. Six years later, she is found in a cabin in the woods, barely alive, and with no memory of the years she was missing. Returning home to learn her husband has remarried and her son is being raised by another woman, she soon finds herself implicated in a new series of murders.
The Absentia Canadian premiere date comes after Showcase previously released a new teaser for the show advertising a premiere date coming this winter. This date and time feel pretty perfect — Sunday nights remain a big one for TV across the board, and the show is coming on early enough in the year that it can take advantage of that cold winter weather up in Canada. (As someone with years of experience living in Toronto, we know what that’s like!) We’d be a little more worried about the NFL / Oscars / Winter Olympics counter-programming coming the show’s way were it not for the fact that an Absentia season 2 is already set to be filmed in the new year. Plus, we like that the series is premiering early enough that it’ll get you hooked before most of that other competitioncomes on the air in February.
As someone who has seen the Absentia premiere in advance, let’s just say that you’re going to want to watch this — it’s intense, thought-provoking, and an overall great character drama that has echoes of a True Detective or The Sinner, the limited series that aired on USA this past summer. Katic is magnificent in the premiere and if you loved her on Castle, you’re going to love her even more here.
Absentia will stream on Amazon in the US — no American premiere date has been set as of yet.

have been waiting to get the starting date on this series and am looking forward to seeing it this January! Have heard good things about the show ,the great acting and script! Sunday night at 9 should be a fine time for the show to be put on as I understand it is sort of “dark” and exciting and for adult audiences! So not too early and not too late for the grown ups! Should be good!
