Tobias Menzies could return for Outlander season 4

Tobias Menzies

Here is some news regarding Outlander season 4 that we didn’t think we’d be reporting: Tobias Menzies could be coming back in some capacity. The actor, previously a Supporting Actor Golden Globe nominee for the show, plays two of the show’s most notable characters in Frank / Black Jack Randall. However, our feeling was that after Claire went back to the past, his story was done and we probably wouldn’t see him again. We washed our hands of the possibility and simply hoped that there would be a chance to see Menzies land a job where he could be the lead and have plenty of time in the spotlight.

Now … well, let’s just say there’s a chance Menzies could come back in some shape or form, much to our great surprise and excitement. This is something showrunner Ronald D. Moore confirmed to Deadline in a new postmortem of the season:

“I think there’s a strong possibility we’re going to [bring him back somehow]. We’ve been talking about doing some way of getting Tobias back in the show in Season 4, at least for some flashbacks, or some other kinds of sequences. So nothing’s been committed yet, but yeah that’s on the table.”

If there’s a great reason to bring Tobias back we certainly wouldn’t be opposed to it — it’s another reminder of the journey from start to finish of Claire Fraser. He was there in the pilot, and our dream always was to find a way to bring him back for the series finale (whenever that may be, hopefully not soon) as a way to help ensure that the series comes full-circle. It’s going to be hard for Outlander to find a villain more terrible than Black Jack … though we’re sure they will try. Frank, meanwhile, is always an interesting source of discussion. He did help raise Brianna, and just from that vantage point alone he will always be important to Claire.

Also, if Menzies were to turn up for an episode or two down the line, that certainly wouldn’t stop him from being able to find another role for himself elsewhere. It’s just something that he could pop in and do in Scotland for a few days. It’d be a short reunion, but more than likely a happy one with Caitriona Balfe, Sam Heughan, and the rest of the cast and crew.
