Outlander season 3: What are the Golden Globe odds for the series itself?

Watch the Outlander season 3 premiere

Throughout this week we’ve discussed Outlander through the lens of the 2018 Golden Globes, especially when it comes to what the realistic odds are of a nomination tomorrow morning. If you missed CarterMatt’s pieces revolving around Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan, be sure to check those out over here.

Today, the focus is being shifted over slightly to the series itself, which makes some sense given that Outlander has been nominated in the Drama Series category before. It was two years ago, but given the timing of the third season airing (right in the middle of the voting window) and the series’ international popularity, we’re feeling cautiously optimistic (just as we are with Sam) that Outlander could get a little love. We’ve said a few times over now that Caitriona probably has the best chance to get a nod, but we are hopeful for the love to be spread elsewhere as well.

In the eyes of most experts, Outlander is considered an underdog for the Drama Series nod. That’s largely a byproduct of some insane competition this year. Game of Thrones delivered a huge season this summer, The Crown is back in action, and The Handmaid’s Tale is considered by many to be the favorite of winning the award, let alone getting the nomination. This Is Us, Stranger Things, Mindhunter, The Americans, Homeland, The Deuce, The Good Doctor, and The Leftovers are just a handful of some of the other shows Outlander is going to be competing with to get a nomination. Personally, we think that Game of Thrones, The Handmaid’s Tale, and The Crown are all locks.

Part of the problem with the Golden Globes in general is that they are only nominating five shows in this category. Five. Think of how many drama series are out there — the Emmys are allowing more, just as the Oscars are allowing more people in for Best Picture. why not expand the field to either six or seven? If Outlander is snubbed it’s not going to be the only show in that position bright and early tomorrow morning (we will be covering the nominations and snubs tomorrow so be sure to check back!). Once you rule out the three aforementioned locks, that is leaving room only for two more shows.

Does Outlander need a nomination?

it doesn’t need it, but it would be nice. This is not a show dependent on awards to get more episodes or attention from the media. It’s already renewed for a fourth season and it’s one of the most well-marketed cable series out there. The problem often is just that awards voters have some of their favorites and stick with them; ultimately, voters often have a tendency to show prejudice towards shows that lean towards fantasy or romance in terms of genre. In the case of Outlander, it checks off both boxes. When you think about the fantasy bias it’s amazing that Game of Thrones has gotten as much love as it has.

Also, we have a feeling that Starz knows that Outlander is loved by its fans and it’ll get plenty of chances to score some awards elsewhere.
