The latest Absentia Canadian promo and what it means

Absentia Canadian promo

Earlier on in the week, we told you that the Absentia premiere date in Canada was set for at some point this winter. Now, we’ve got the teaser for you to check out!

This teaser comes courtesy of Showcase, the network that is the Canadian broadcaster for the Stana Katic series. It’s not exactly groundbreaking material in that it’s similar to many other versions of the teaser we’ve seen elsewhere — nonetheless, the broadcaster kicking off the marketing for the show now is a good sign that it will be premiering at some point in January or February. Showcase has been holding onto Absentia for a long time now — they first acquired it many months ago, well before the start of the fall season — but they’ve decided that this is the right time to premiere it.

While we know that the long wait has probably led to some frustration among Canadian viewers, in retrospect we actually think that Showcase did the right thing in holding off until the new year. Look at it this way — through much of Canada, winter is not the sort of time you want to go outdoors ever, especially after three or four o’clock in the afternoon. (As someone who spent the better part of years in Toronto, we can vouch for this.) There aren’t many other options at night other than curling up somewhere and enjoying a good TV show. Absentia is one of the perfect shows to do this with given that it’s an immersive drama with memorable characters and a mystery that will leave you guessing.

The fact that Absentia is getting promotion now shows that it will continue to do so in the months to come — that matters mostly in the effort of building confidence in the series moving into season 2 and, hopefully, a season 3 in the future. (The series has already been picked up for a second season, but why not reach for the stars?) Canada should be a good building block towards the show’s long-term success — Castle was very popular north of the border and beyond that, Stana Katic herself is originally from Ontario.
