Is a Psych: The Movie sequel possible based on ratings?
Thursday night’s original broadcast of the movie on USA drew in total a 0.5 rating coupled with around 1.26 million viewers, enough to make the show #1 on cable in terms of scripted original programming. While it’s down slightly from the Psych season 8 ratings average, you also have to remember a couple of important things here.
1. Psych season 8 first aired back in early 2014, more than three years ago. A lot has changed since then in terms of how often people watch television live — it’s so much harder to get some of those viewers than it once was.
2. Psych: The Movie was trending worldwide during its first airing and there are probably going to be some other repeat viewings of it over the coming weeks that draw in some additional revenue for the network.
Our sentiment right now is that the performance of this movie is going to easily make Psych: The Movie 2 a reality, especially since the movie’s release may lead to increased DVD sales of the original series or the show getting some more money in streaming rights. USA needs brands right now, and they may have a feeling that several of their brands are starting to fare. Suits is likely near the end of its run on USA, and while a season 8 renewal is likely, what else is there beyond that? Meanwhile, Mr. Robot is critically beloved but is hardly a big ratings performer, and many of their other shows like Queen of the South don’t get the mainstream attention that they deserve.
Hopefully, at some point over the next year news about a Psych: The Movie sequel will come out. We don’t think that an announcement is sper-imminent, but it’s hard to imagine just how USA is going to be crying themselves to sleep over these numbers for a show that has been off the air for some long.
