The Mueller Files serves as SNL cold open: Donald Trump Jr., Julian Assange

Dave ChappelleGoing into this weekend’s new Saturday Night Live old open, we wondered if we would see more of Alec Baldwin. He took last week off, and often when there are batches of three episodes he’ll turn up both for the first and last ones in order to play Donald Trump.

Yet, that was not ultimately the case tonight. Instead, we went with the one-two punch of Donald Trump Jr. (Mikey Day) and Eric (Alex Moffat) alongside The Mueller Files. What was this? Basically, a reenactment of a “meeting” between Julian Assange and the Trumps. It was every bit as silly and ridiculous as you probably hoped that it would be, whether it be the entire thing being set up as an Investigation Discovery series or the Trump characters continuing to be incredibly silly. Eric Trump remains afraid of everything and has an attention span of a few seconds.

Was this the funniest cold open in the world? Not really. We’ve seen these characters before and we’ve also seen many of these jokes before. Trump having a secret meeting with Julian Assange was slightly relevant, but not altogether controversial and notable. The best thing about the sketch may have been the name. We really wish that there was some sort of ridiculous Mulder / Scully combo who showed up to solve mysteries that were painfully obvious … such as all of the evidence of communication between Russia and parts of the Trump Administration.

We do understand why Baldwin wasn’t here if for no other reason than that it was a pretty quiet Trump week. There weren’t too many headlines by and large — at least compared to past weeks where there’s been an avalanche. SNL will be back with new episodes next month, so maybe we’ll kick off the holiday season with an appearance from him.
