Doctor Who Christmas Special 2017 sneak peek: Who hates the Tardis?
In the video below (which comes via the annual BBC One Children in Need special), you can see a rather amusing scene where the first Doctor (played by David Bradley imitating William Hartnell) has some not-so-lovely things to say about the Tardis. He just doesn’t like it, which is a shame because this is the place where the future version of himself gets the majority of his traveling done.
From here, One also makes another horrifying revelation (at least to him) in that Twelve is a future version of himself. He doesn’t realize that right away and this is an uncomfortable experience for him. Part of the joy that comes out of getting the very first addition of this character back seems to stem from the fact that you’re bringing on board someone who really doesn’t understand many of the mechanics or what it actually means to be the Doctor. He’s just someone who is starting to come to grips with the surrounding world and his own mortality. Part of the fun of this episode is going to be seeing how these two versions of the same man each choose to cope with what is happening around them — they in some ways are very different given that Twelve has been through a wide array of different experiences. Yet, they are also the same and Twelve has his own issues of mortality. He does realize that a regeneration is coming and there is something still horrifying about this. Regeneration is not exactly depicted as a pleasant experience for The Doctor — it’s painful, and is effectively shedding one skin, one recognizable part of your identity and replacing it with something new.
We’ll see how all of this plays out during the Christmas Special; for now, be sure to follow the link in the tweet if you want to support Children in Need.
