The Punisher season 2 renewal hopes: Will Jon Bernthal series return

Punisher season 2

Following today’s big premiere on Netflix, are odds high for The Punisher season 2 to happen at some point in the future? Is there a reasonably good chance that we will see more of Frank Castle?

Depending on how the story ends for the first season our answer here is fairly clear: It’s hard to imagine a situation in which the show does not come back for another go-around on Netflix. This is one of the most-anticipated series of its kind in quite some time, and it may have just as much hype as The Defenders. Even though that show did have a lot of buzz for a while, some of it seemed to fade away by the end thanks in part to the lukewarm reviews for Iron Fist (which CarterMatt actually liked quite a bit). The Punisher is a risky endeavor — it’s violent, it’s dark, and there may be some viewers who think that it’s a little bit beyond the pale.

Yet, if you are one of those viewers, we simply suggest this: Don’t even bother getting into it. This is not The Avengers or one of the other Marvel series you see on the big screen. This is not for the faint of heart.

A possible Punisher season 2, (no matter when a renewal is ordered) probably would not air for a long time. Marvel and Netflix have a habit of having long breaks in between new seasons of their shows, mostly because there are other series they have to put out there and they also had to film The Defenders. Maybe we’ll be surprised, but personally we wouldn’t expect to see Jon Bernthal back on Netflix as Frank Castle until late 2018 or even 2019.

As for whether or not we expect the upcoming Disney-owned streaming service to impact this series (after all, Disney does own Marvel), we don’t think it will. This is a property that is already on Netflix, and we don’t foresee them wanting to move it and risking some of its viewership.
