Is Ryan Eggold leaving The Blacklist as Tom Keen after fall finale? NBC statement
While for the longest time we felt as though Tom’s life-or-death crisis, (which was teased in the season premiere) was going to end with him making it out of this situation alive, that didn’t happen. Instead, Ryan Eggold is done with the show and Tom is gone. The shock here is that the producers actually went there after so much hype. The surprise was that there was no surprise, but it was beautifully done in an episode that really kicked you right in the heart.
In a statement, Eggold confirmed his exit with the following:
I feel incredibly lucky to have played a role with such a uniquely dynamic evolution. I’m grateful for the time spent working with Megan, James and the entire cast. I’m thankful to the incredibly hard-working crew for consistently making the show better. Sony and NBC have both been deeply supportive, conscientious and adept in managing the show. Mostly I’m indebted to Jon Bokenkamp, John Eisendrath and the writers for continuing to elevate the show creatively and always impassioning me to further explore the true nature of this character. I will miss this TV family immensely and diligently look forward to the opportunity to embody new characters and tell new stories.
Here are a couple more important statements to go along with that.
John Eisendrath, executive producer – “Of all the words I’ve written on the show, two of the hardest were when Red told Liz: ‘Tom’s dead.’ Nooooo! We’ll miss the intensity, range and just plain bad ass-ness Ryan brought to the part. Won’t come as any surprise — but he went down swinging!.”
Jon Bokenkamp, executive producer – “I have such tremendous respect for Ryan and everything he brought to The Blacklist. The character of Tom Keen was a blast to write, and that’s only because we knew Ryan could pull off whatever we threw at him. That said, we always knew Tom’s exploits would one day get him killed — the Blacklist won’t be the same without him. Looking ahead, Tom’s death upends the show in a way we’re very excited about, and our next episode is unlike anything we’ve done before. But it won’t be the same around here without Mr. Keen. As for Mr. Eggold, I think he’s gonna be just fine — he’s gonna have a long and rewarding career.”
The Blacklist returns from its hiatus on Wednesday, January 3, and from there the show can try to pick up the pieces a little bit. This is a game-changing move, one that alters the show in many different ways. We’re very interested in seeing what Eggold does next — this exit gives him time to do a wide array of other things if he so chooses for the 2018-19 season.

I was crushed to learn Ryan wouldn’t be returning to the show. I thought his character was as much an integral part of the show as was James, Megan and Hisham. How can you not care for Dembe who is always looking out for and taking care of Reddington? And Tom who was always there for Elizabeth and Baby Agnes. I’m sorry, but I don’t feel there is anyone will be able to replace him. I loved his character and I’ll truly miss both Tom and Ryan.

There has never been anything quite like the slow, simmering redemption
of the Tom Keen character on The Blacklist and Ryan Eggold has been
captivating over the years bringing the writers vision to life and on
Thursday’s episode he was positively mesmerizing

I found myself holding my breath during the portion where the Sound of Silence was the music. I figured Tom wasn’t going to make it but I think the 10 month time leap was a stretch. It didn’t have to go almost a year!
This show IS Reddington. Without James Spader there wouldn’t be The Blacklist. Those of you upset they killed off Tom, I agree, but he’d been gone last season for his own spin-off, which I watched but KNEW wasn’t going to be renewed. It was one dimensional, unlike The Blacklist, which is multidimensional. Tom was only one of those dimensions. Liz having to deal with his death, with missing almost a year of Agnes’ childhood, with her injuries, AND with the little bit Tom told her on the telephone before he died, she’s going to have so many issues to deal with. Megan and James will potentially have some of their greatest father/daughter moments dealing with Tom’s demise. Red will feel responsible for Liz’s pain, even if Tom’s death solves his immediate problem, he knows Liz loved Tom. He also realized how much Tom tried to protect Liz and Agnes.
I don’t understand viewers who just make statements such as, “I’m no longer watching because they killed off…” whoever it might be in the cast. Rather than see what the writers have planned, you just decide it’s not worth watching if one cast member is sacrificed for the betterment of the whole? I think that’s funny. Yes, Tom and Liz were a love story but if you live in reality, you know tragedy can happen and no one lives happily ever after so WHY would you think they should when Reddington is your father?!
I wish we knew WHO those bones and DNA were! I hate these long breaks in seasons!! It’s not nice to do to loyal viewers and it’s detrimental to ratings. During that long hiatus, viewers could drift to another show and become disenchanted with the one on hiatus. NBC seems to do it a lot and so does ABC. Maybe that’s why CBS has better overall ratings.

Well I’m not happy Tom is dead but the writers don’t care what the fans want. They didn’t have to kill him off, they could have thought of something else rather than kill him off. He didn’t even get to see his daughter grow up. I’m not sure if I’m going to like it anymore. Thanks for ruining Liz’s life. Y’all suck!

It’s a television show people! It’s not like James/Red just killed Ryan/Tom and ruined Liz/Megan’s life! Were you watching last season when Tom was gone doing Redemption? Well they could have killed him there and not given them a wedding and closure for his character. You guys are mad at the writers, at Reddington (a fictional person on a fictional show) but you started watching because of the relationship between Red and Liz…THEY are the show. Don’t watch, watch, whatever but remember the show is about Red’s list of criminals and NOT supposed to be a love story between Liz and Tom!!

Tom’s character was interesting and complex due to his faded identity. The screenwriters did not answer us what his role was in the series. His intentions at the beginning were not good and they did not give us the answer who had ever been his boss and did he was part of cabal If his death was fake it would be the second or third fake death in the series and it is no longer interesting. When the screenwriter loses the thread they kill somebody and then bring again back.Five season drama without logical response and ansvers. The series turned into Mexican soap, instead of a very good criminal series. James Spider is charismatic but if the series starts to paste only for the number of episodes or to fill the season it becomes unconvincing and negligent. I’m talking about the story, not about the quality of dramaturgy

It’s not fake. They’ve already stated it’s real. Tom IS dead.

Intense and heart- wrenching is how I would describe last night ‘s episode! The scene with Tom and Liz in the car on the way to the hospital was beautifully done and brought tears to my eyes!

Last night was one of the best episodes of the series. The show has some serious life left in it.

I hear you Selma – no Tom, no Blacklist. Sorry writers, you had a great love story going and you blew it. Was with you from day one but from here on it would just bum me out. Just have to find something else to watch and try to forget this – wish I’d never started in the first place!

I wanna know: What the hell is so important about that damned skeleton that got Ryan Eggold’s Character killed in the first place?? Second, killing off any character is never an easy thing. No matter the medium. TV, radio, Movies, novels, comics. Makes no difference. There’s going to be some serious ramifications and repercussions over Tom’s death. Count on it. And Red better be ready for what comes next, especially with Liz! She’s going to want to know why and how?
Denbe’s right. There never’ll be peace if Red continues on with his secrets and lies. Mark my words. There’s going to be hell to pay.

I haven’t missed him from last season and never watched the Redemption show. His story line was not of interest since he broke away last year.

I liked Tom but he wasn’t the whole show remember when he was gone I never really missed him . He wasn’t even going to be back but the cancellation of redemption they brought him back to close up storyline on Tom. If the show would of not cancelled he would not of came back to blacklist .so at least this way he came back to Liz and married and showed their love til the end .

The only reason I kept watching this show was for Liz and Tom. Now that he is dead I won’t be tuning in again.
Sure some people watched because they liked Red being a narcissistic , paranoid, sociopath incapable of caring about anything but his selfish, self centered self but I stayed for the love story which is now, dead.
I’ll add these producers to the list of shows I won’t ever tune into again.

I have absolutely no interest in ever watching this show without Tom, period. Tom and Liz were a beautiful love story that did not have to end that way; don’t need to see a widow put her life back together while dealing with her psycho dad – see enough heartache in real life. That was a nasty thing to do to fans, and now that we’ve heard “Tom is dead” I look forward to the inevitable follow up: “The Blacklist is cancelled.”

I agree.Just watched my last episode, too.
If people think this show was solely watched for Red being a mass murderer they are sadly mistaken.

I am devastated. I love The Blacklist, and this season has been very exciting. However, a major part of that excitement was embodied in TOM. I just hate it that he’s gone. I guess nothing can be done about that, though, except that I really hope that NBC will put him into another REALLY GOOD show, one that I would want to watch. I did like that spin-off of The Blacklist, and it’s too bad that didn’t continue. But really, Tom (Ryan) could pull off a show all on his own.

Yes Tom will be missed. He is just part of the show. I think a lot of other people feel the same. The episode was great. Just wished he did not die.

Perhaps it is Mr. Eggold who asked for the exit. We don’t know.
