Taylor Swift, Tiffany Haddish prepare you for this weekend’s SNL

Taylor Swift

This weekend’s new Saturday Night Live episode is almost here, and for their final preview NBC is giving you both host Tiffany Haddish and musical guest Taylor Swift.

Is this preview a fun one? Well, that’s debatable. Haddish and Swift sell the heck out of it, and we love how Tiffany makes the most of what is one of the most tired jokes out there about Swift — she constantly writes songs about people who have wronged her in some way. Unlike some other Swift song-targets though, Haddish wants to be immortalized. We’re not altogether sure that this is the sort of thing to covet, but that is obviously a part of the joke. We’d blame ourselves for ruining it here if it wasn’t such an overdone premise in the first place.

Haddish and Swift’s little dance at the end brings the whole bit home — at least enough to make it satisfying as opposed to a complete clunker.

One of the things that we’ve heard a thousand times or so already about this weekend’s show is that this is an “odd pairing.” How so? Is it any weirder than Larry David and Miley Cyrus last week? To us it doesn’t feel like it, and we think it’s a smart move to have a great up-and-coming host on the show — it allows the show to create its own expectation as opposed to drowning in hype. Pairing Haddish with Swift is a smart way to have a good show and guarantee good ratings in the process. Haddish is probably someone that Lorne Michaels and the producers wanted but who, (like Kumail Nanjiani) may not be that big of a sell to the mainstream. Pairing these comedians with notable musical guests helps to get the show headlines and deliver a great product in the end.

The timing for Taylor’s appearance on this particular weekend is no coincidence. Remember that today is the launch for her new album “Reputation,” and the goal for her is to get as much exposure for her songs as possible. The only reason why she may not appear in many sketches (beyond her performances) is that she may not have had time in the midst of all of the album press.
