House of Cards producers confirm Kevin Spacey investigation years ago

The saga of Kevin Spacey and House of Cards is continuing — and at this point, the show’s future is in serious doubt.

Days ago, production on the Netflix series was suspended indefinitely in the wake of allegations made by Anthony Rapp against the actor. Spacey apologized for his actions, but since that time there have been other accusations made, including a CNN report saying that there have been complaints about sexual harassment and misconduct involving Spacey and members of the show’s production. This was confirmed (in part) in a statement by production company Media Rights Capital, citing one investigation that was taken back during the first season. Here is their statement via Deadline:

“During our first year of production in 2012, someone on the crew shared a complaint about a specific remark and gesture made by Kevin Spacey … Immediate action was taken following our review of the situation and we are confident the issue was resolved promptly to the satisfaction of all involved.”

Earlier, House of Cards creator Beau Willimon issued a statement saying “Anthony Rapp’s story is deeply troubling. During the time I worked with Kevin Spacey on House of Cards, I neither witnessed nor was aware of any inappropriate behavior on set or off. That said, I take reports of such behavior seriously and this is no exception. I feel for Mr. Rapp and I support his courage.” The investigation may not have been one he was aware of years ago, hence him commenting in the way that he did.

Is it over for House of Cards?

This is just our opinion, but we don’t quite know how this show can move forward. Spacey and the allegations will follow the show anywhere it goes from here on out, and as a result of that it feels like the only thing that they could do is try to remove him from the equation and finish out the series without Frank Underwood. That’s also probably a near-impossible task. This is a tough situation for the show — you want to offer up closure to fans, and you don’t want to penalize the other cast and crew members for the actions of one person.

We just hope that one way or another, Netflix determines the show’s future in the days ahead and doesn’t leave everyone wondering.
