House of Cards spin-off reportedly planned following final season

House of Cards spin-off

Is a House of Cards spin-off already set to take shape at Netflix? For the time being, signs suggest it’s happening.

According to a new report from Variety, the folks over at the streaming service, (coupled with production company Media Rights Capital) are in the process of developing a possible spin-off to the long-running drama series. Yesterday CarterMatt reported that the series will conclude at the end of season 6, with this decision being made long before the recent accusations against star Kevin Spacey.

At the moment the leading possibility for a House of Cards spin-off is one featuring Doug Stanhope (Michael Kelly), the Chief of Staff for Frank Underwood who has been at the center of the show for seasons. The idea here seems to be reasonably similar to the one that we’ve seen HBO construct with Game of Thrones, one where they look at a wide array of different possibilities before ultimately settling on the one that they want and Netflix has some time to settle on something so there really isn’t a rush here.

House of Cards season 6 will premiere at some point in the new year, and it’s possible that there is no new spin-off at all. This is a tough spot for Netflix to be in following the Spacey accusations — you don’t want to punish the rest of the cast and crew for the actions of one person, but at the same time you also don’t want to be in a position where the actions of one man end up causing the metaphorical house of cards here to fall. There are opportunities to tell some more stories within this universe, and if they can manage to get away from Frank Underwood there could be some good stories to tell. We just wonder if it’s going to be that easy — can you imagine a House of Cards publicity tour at the moment? It’s a rather hard thing to think about, especially since the comments from Anthony Rapp are not the sort of thing that just blow over (nor should they be).

What do you think: Do we need a House of Cards spin-off, or is Netflix better off just distancing themselves from this franchise altogether? Share in the comments section below!
