The Walking Dead season 8 episode 2 preview: Who is returning?

Walking Dead season 8 episode 2

When The Walking Dead season 8 episode 2 premieres on AMC next week, we could be in for somewhat of a surprise (and who doesn’t love surprises!). While we often like to wait until later in the the article before we get to sharing the synopsis, we do think that there’s some value in just getting to the good stuff now — it lends to a little more CarterMatt analysis:

The plan involving Alexandrians, Kingdommers and Hilltoppers unfolds; as Rick continues to fight, he encounters a familiar face.

So who could this familiar face be? There are a couple of different theories that you could easily throw out there, but the one that’s clearly #1 at the moment is that it’s Heath. He is the most prominent character currently missing in action — there may be other ones out there, but would they really make the sort of big splash that you were hoping for? There are a few other possible names out there you could consider like Eugene, but we already know that he is with the Saviors now… or is he???? He has always been a coward since the first day we met him and will follow anyone who’s willing to protect him, but we would like to think that he’s had a bit of growth since then and will eventually do the right thing and turn on Negan, but that’s a conversation for another time.

We suppose that it’s possible that The Walking Dead brings in someone from much earlier in the series’ run here to make an appeal to some longtime fans, especially since you could create a moment around this that allows for some backstory opportunities.

One of the other questions that is worth asking here is this: How does Rick encounter this familiar face? Is it someone who is on the other side with the Saviors, or is it someone who is just off on their own? This matters when it comes to whether or not they are someone who can be properly recruited onto Team Rick moving forward, given that this is a guy who needs all of the help that he can get in order to win this war. Negan’s side has the numbers and there are some smart people in his group, but with how comfortable they are living now, they may not be quite as crafty as Rick’s side. Having the numbers is great, but smart planning will win this war.
