Supernatural season 13 episode 4 spoilers: Sam, Dean tackle grief

Supernatural season 13 episode 4

Do you love it when the Winchesters show off their softer, more emotional side? Then odds are you will love Supernatural season 13 episode 4. This is an episode that could touch more on what are some of the subjects first introduced during the premiere episode, including some of the sorrow that Sam and Dean are feeling at the moment.

Remember the state of things from their perspective at present: They think Castiel is dead. Meanwhile, they also think that Mary is gone. While neither one of these things may be entirely true in the long-term, the short-term is the present reality. They have lost people for good before, and with that it feels possible that something similar could happen to them again … even if we’ve seen people be revived on the show before.

Supernatural season 13 episode 4 is entitled “The Big Empty,” and you can see below for a few more details regarding how the show will be channeling some Winchester grief:

“When multiple patients of grief counselor Mia Vallens (guest star Rukiya Bernard) turn up dead, Sam (Jared Padalecki), Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Jack (Alexander Calvert) investigate the mystery surrounding the murders and, each inadvertently, are forced to deal with unresolved grief of their own. John Badham directed the episode written by Meredith Glynn (#1304). Original airdate 11/2/2017.”

We should start off by saying here that we hate that the boys are struggling with something — you never want to see Sam and Dean sad! Yet, it feels appropriate that this would be something that they would struggle with, and it feels right for the show to approach the material and take it on in this way. You don’t want to shoehorn these sort of emotions into an episode, and it’s better for it to be reactionary. Given the nature of the case that it looks like Sam and Dean are working on here, it makes some sense that feelings could come out of it. Also remember that there’s plenty more grief that they have to focus on than just Castiel and Mary — remember everyone else who has fallen, which we referenced a little earlier on.

If you’re looking for an episode that could feature a super-strong performance from both Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, this is it. The fact that Supernatural can do a show about something this serious and then a Scooby-Doo crossover later this season just shows how weird and wonderful it truly is. How else would be bold enough to give this even remotely a try?
