Survivor’s Remorse season 5 not happening; Starz basketball comedy ending
Today, The Hollywood Reporter claims that the Starz basketball comedy is set to conclude, and the upcoming season 4 finale airing on Sunday will now be the end of the series. Here is what the network’s president and CEO in Chris Albrecht had to say about the decision:
“We have been fortunate to work with incredible talents like Mike O’Malley, the executive producers and our cast on this very special show for four seasons … this may be the end of the Calloways’ story, we do believe that the themes Survivor’s Remorse confronted over the seasons, through a unique mix of humor and sober observation, will be appreciated for the insightful, heartfelt way they were addressed. We are proud of the show.”
If you are proud of it, why not renew it? Somewhere along the lines here the reality could be that it wasn’t performing well enough to meet executives’ reputations — or at least that’s what we wonder. We will always question if the show performed significantly better if the decision to end it may have been made at a different time.
What may have made this decision even harder is that this show had significant star power behind the scenes, with NBA great LeBron James serving as an executive producer. We do certainly think he will still be happy with the performance of the show in the end, which makes a whole lot of sense given that he really should be. How can you be anything less than thrilled over the performance of this show? You’re talking about a program that had a chance to run for four seasons and stay true to itself the entire time.
We’re also partial to this show given that Mike O’Malley, the showrunner, remains very much a bright light from our childhood. Guts remains one of our favorite shows in Nickelodeon history and we do hope that he someday is offered up another chance at a game show like this for adults — we did love him on Glee, Yes, Dear, and a wide array of other things, but Guts still brings it home. He remains one of the most underrated writing/acting talents in a rather long time.
Unfortunately with Survivor’s Remorse and many of Starz’s recent comedies in general they’ve struggled to really find enormous audiences. This is where we also pour one out for Blunt Talk, another show we really enjoyed that only lasted a couple of seasons. while the network does have huge hits with Outlander and Power they still have a little bit more work that needs to be done on some other parts of the schedule. Time will tell what happens there.
