Will Ten Days in the Valley be Fall TV’s first cancellation? Sunday ratings
The first episode of their Kyra Sedgwick series, despite a good lead-in from Shark Tank, drew a woeful 0.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic and slightly less than 3.5 million viewers. The total viewer number probably isn’t as terrible, but when you remember that most new shows lose a chunk of their audience almost immediately it’s possible that this show slides down to a 0.5 or a 0.4 rating before you know it. This is a sad thing to think about, especially since Sedgwick was outstanding on The Closer and there was some excitement out there for her to have a new show.
As of right now, it feels possible that this will be the first cancellation of the 2017-18 TV season; we don’t take any pleasure in that, but it’s hard to see the course changing unless critics manage to lift up the show — and that hasn’t entirely happened so far.
At least ABC can take some pleasure in the second episode of Shark Tank on Sunday generating a 1.4 in its normal 9:00 p.m. Eastern timeslot — if that continues, it should be more than fine in this spot for many weeks to come.
Other notable ratings on the night
The Toy Box abysmal – It’s hard to do much worse than the 0.4 rating for the show in its new timeslot at 7:00 p.m. Eastern. We at CarterMatt didn’t love some of the changes, so it’ll be interesting to see if some other people feel the same way.
How was Wisdom of the Crowd on the night? – If it keeps the 1.4 rating it has right now in the finals (it’s likely going to adjust due to the NFL), CBS may be reasonably satisfied with its performance. This show won’t necessarily change broadcast television, but it checks many boxes when you think about what the network is likely hoping to achieve.
A solid start for NCIS: Los Angeles – When you think about its timeslot a 1.2 rating isn’t all that bad — it’s better than many other shows on CBS at 9:00 / 9:30 p.m. over the past few years.
A great start for Ghosted over on Fox – Consider that there was no NFL assistance on the night — with that, the network has to be thrilled that the Adam Scott / Craig Robinson comedy not only matched the 1.4 rating for The Simpsons, but that it also managed to top it in total viewers. If this show does get a nice NFL ratings lift soon, we’re excited to see what that could’ve done for the numbers. We’re mostly just shocked that Fox didn’t wait to premiere this show until it could benefit more from some of those football figures to increase overall exposure.
