Grey’s Anatomy 300th episode title has Hamilton roots
Based on what we’ve got on Twitter below via executive producer Shonda Rhimes, and a recent report from SpoilerTV citing Jesse Williams’ Instagram story, it’s been confirmed that “Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story” is the title for this milestone hour. Returning executive producer Krista Vernoff, one of the main creatives behind this season, is writing the episode; meanwhile, executive producer / frequent director Debbie Allen is helming the hour. Clearly, the show is taking this seriously.
Now, the question that we envision many people out there having after viewing this title is rather simple: Does this mean in any shape or form that we’re getting a musical episode? We do feel like it’s understandable to wonder, but we don’t necessarily see it that way. Grey’s Anatomy has already done that and it didn’t turn out all that well. Therefore, all of us at CarterMatt don’t feel altogether set on the idea of really needing this to happen in order for the show to be memorable. “Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story” is so much about identity as anything else. It’s about legacy, debating the merit of victors and defeated, and finding a way to stand out amidst the crowd. Given that this has long been a show about legacy in some forms, we do think that the title fits much of what we know the show to be.
Given that this is such a huge milestone, and one very few shows actually reach, we’re instantly curious in learning how we’re going to see the series properly celebrate it. Maybe they do this by recruiting some former guest stars from years past, or maybe they opt for some experimental themes or stories we wouldn’t predict in advance. For the time being, though, what we know is that Grey’s Anatomy should enjoy a nice victory lap and have a lot of celebration around this episode given that this is not something that a lot of people out there get a chance to experience. This is especially true for the likes of Ellen Pompeo, Justin Chambers, James Pickens Jr., who have all been a part of the show and the experience from the very beginning.
Grey’s Anatomy will premiere on ABC this coming Thursday night with a two-hour episode; at the moment, we would anticipate the 300th episode airing in November during sweeps — which really is the perfect time for it to happen, no?
