Big Little Lies season 2: Director Jean-Marc Vallée suddenly more open

Jean-Marc Vallée

Following the success of the original limited series, director Jean-Marc Vallée seemed to be a little pessimistic about a Big Little Lies season 2. Has time — and a lot of love from the Emmys — changed that sentiment? It certainly seems like that may be the case.

Speaking in a new interview (per TVLine) backstage following the limited series’ big win, the director had the following to say about his interest in returning to the property, provided of course that the cast and crew are able to come together and make it happen:

“I’m just like the audience and like these girls and everyone else… It’d be great to reunite the team and to do it … re we going to be able to do it, altogether? I wish. We’ll see.”

The talk from star/executive producer Reese Witherspoon as well as HBO programming head Casey Bloys is that they would like to be able to do more, but they want original source author Liane Moriarty to be involved in some capacity. Not only that, but they also want to ensure that the cast is all available — something that is not an altogether easy feat much of the time when you consider everything that they have going on in their lives. Given the success of the first season of the show, it means that they are likely going to have even more commitments. This is the interesting paradox of the show; being successful at it basically means that the odds of getting the time to do another season is a little lower than it would be otherwise.

Do we think that it will eventually happen? Probably, but given that the show’s future right now is mostly in the “conversations” phase, we figure that the most likely thing that will happen is that you’ll see season 2 in either 2019 or 2020. There’s no reason to think that it would happen before then, and HBO at the moment is showing that they have no real issue at all waiting to make things happen if they feel that the content is worthwhile. This is something that they even benefit from on occasion, given that there are merits here and there to being able to allow some source material to percolate for a little while.

Once there is more on a Big Little Lies season 2, we’ll be sure to let you know. For the time being, though, we don’t anticipate learning the show’s future fate one way or another until we roll around to 2018 at the earliest.

Do you think that a Big Little Lies season 2 will happen?
