The Last Tycoon season 2 hopes dim; Amazon cancels Matt Bomer series

Matt Bomer

For all Matt Bomer fans out there, this news is going to come as a disappointment. His latest drama The Last Tycoon is no more.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, one of the reasons for the show’s cancellation over at Amazon comes as the streaming service continues to search for their next great hit while also making sure they don’t spent an exorbitant amount of money to do so. The Last Tycoon was an expensive affair, which can’t come as a shock given that it is a period drama inspired by the work of F. Scott Fitzgerald. They don’t release ratings information publicly, but there was obviously something in those numbers that they were unhappy about to the point that they did not want to bring the show back for another run.

Could another network pick it up? It’s unlikely, just because of the series’ run and because it wasn’t on for long enough for the show to accumulate an enormous audience.

We certainly don’t think that this cancellation has anything to do with Bomer’s ability to carry a show, given that we’ve seen him do that most recently with White Collar over on USA. We certainly wouldn’t mind him coming back there and doing a limited series or movie (they’re doing it with Psych), while also moving forward and figuring out what other avenues he could take on in his career. We’d love to see him do something really comedic, or take on a different sort of dramatic role where he doesn’t have so much flair or ambition. Bomer’s been lucky to do everything from The Normal Heart to Chuck, so we feel like he’s going to have the world as his oyster in terms of potential job opportunities coming his way after this. He could always collaborate again with Ryan Murphy, who we’re sure would love to have him back in the fold given some of their past work.

As for the rest of the cast, Lily Collins and Kelsey Grammer are certainly going to be fine. (For the record, the idea of a Frasier revival has already been floated around, but the odds of that happening, even in this modern era, feel incredibly slim. Check out our previous CarterMatt report on that over here.)
