Why a Dark Matter season 4 renewal should happen on Syfy
While Syfy has not officially confirmed one way or another whether a Dark Matter season 4 renewal will happen, we definitely think it should. Why? Well, within this article we’re going to do our best to list out some of the reasons.
First, the ratings – Everything of course has to start here given that a show’s profitability to the network is one of the biggest things that will determine its future one way or another. Here, Dark Matter continues to perform very well in comparison to other science fiction shows — its season 3 average rounds up to be a 0.2 in the 18-49 demographic, and in total its performance is down less than 15% versus season 2.
If you’re a longtime CarterMatt reader, one of the biggest tenants we always preach is that if a show in this modern era maintains more than 85% of its demo viewership year-to-year, it’s doing enough to give it a shot at renewal. Ideally you want to see it in the 90-95% range, but there are very few shows doing that these days. One of the biggest things Dark Matter has going for it is that this is a show that has jumped a whopping 300% before in live+7 data for some of its episodes, and routinely it is one of the best DVR performers out there in terms of percentage gains. There are a ton of people out there who are simply out on Friday nights and still find a way to check the show out after the fact. We do think that this counts for a good bit.
The story – This is the other big argument that we’ll make for more Dark Matter: It’s a show very much in the vein of a Doctor Who or a Star Trek: The Next Generation, where there is a tremendous sense of spirit and imagination injected into every single episode. You can sense the joy that Joseph Mallozzi and the writers put into just about every episode that they do. This matters to people who look to the show as a form of escape from our world, and to capture some sort of wonder or sense of adventure. Syfy isn’t going to be able to replicate that, even if there are some other great shows out there on television and others in the pipeline.
You even get a good idea of the show’s imagination in how they are able to do so much with relatively little. This is not a series with an enormous budget; it finds a way to succeed using the resources that it has, even if not all of them are particularly robust. It deserves an opportunity to put more creative wheels in motion, and for it to get a popular series finale. We know that Mallozzi has a specific plan for the show’s endgame, and we’d love to see that come to fruition.

Dark Matter is one of the best written and performed science fiction has to offer. It reminds me of a similar show that created new ground by good writing and talent of production and action alike. It has to be renewed or leave a bad influence on the network that has a loyal fan base. Renew Dark Matter please.

I am simply flabbergasted. I’ve been a big fan of Sci-fi. I really enjoy watching many show on Sy-Fy. They did very good with Battlestar Galactica, but they did let us down with the prequel Caprica. They cancelled it without giving a tie in with BG. They did very good with AC Clarke story Childhood’s End. Incredible mini-serie.
Right now I was a big fan also of The Expanse. It’s been renewed for another season but what if next year they let us down again while leaving us on a cliff-hanger like they are doing right now with Dark Matter. So why would I invest myself into becoming a fan of a show that I might not see the end of the story line. Too frustrating.
I’m sorry to say but I’m done with Sy-Fy. I will tomorrow cancel my subcription to that channel for good.
It’s not like we don’t have other choice. I have a subscription to CBS All Access, so I will be happy to be able to watch the new Star Trek: Discovery. And then there Gotham on Fox.
Bye bye Sy-Fy

This needs to be renewed. Don’t pull a ‘Freespace’ and leave us hanging. This is the best damn summer show and it deserves to be renewed.

Yes, for sure I want this show renewed. Great mix of characters that yuh feel for and I feel will have or already has a cult following because of the believable storyline. Imagine, I am from Trinidad and Tobago, small islands in this world , galaxy, etc and every week I look forward to watch the crew of ‘The Raza’, not boldly go, but bravely jump into the unexpected…the Black Ships are here…C’mon…Must see TV!

Not only the youngsters, but many of us oldsters are watching DARK MATTER and have done so since the beginning, season 1. We have also eagerly awaited each of the two following seasons, 2 & 3.
Now that we have gotten so vested in this series we are eager for a 4th season.
We hope the SyFy Channel powers that be realize that we old creakers are watching avidls, too, and will greenlight a Season4.
Fingers X-ed!

After watching the finale, there’s no way we don’t get another season. Huge cliffhanger, need to be answered.

Surly you jest there must be a season four and many more seasons. It’s one of the best sci-fy shows on now. It could have many spin offs (Star Trek)

It’s one of the best sci-fi shows recently; very innovative and it should go on. And yes, I don’t watch in on TV. The syfy page streaming is not very user friendly either! Poor design.

Absolutely! I am pretty sure a large chunk of viewers like me aren’t being counted in ratings, because I tend to watch my shows on the computer instead of TV, On Demand. But I am forced to watch just as many commercials as the regular TV airings.
This is THE show that got me back to watching SyFy again after SG1 and then Battlestar Galactica went off the air. What’s more syfy than Dark Matter?

Since you’re watching commercials still I think you’re counted in your own way which is nice! It’s better than DVRing and skipping through commercials.

What I like about Dark Matter and The Expanse is that they are shows about humans spread across many world, not aliens.
I’m a big Sci-Fi fan, I’ve read all the Asimov books, all the Frank Herbert, all the John Brunner, Silverstein, Van Vogt, and so many more.
I love Dark Matter. #renewDarkMatter
BTW when will somebody do something with Asimov’s Foundation. That would do a great miniserie on Sy-FY. I read once that somebody had a project, but never heard anything solid.
I really love Childhood’s end on Sy-Fy. They do great stuff there.

I wish I could upvote this comment 10,000 times. I have been wondering as well if there can ever be some kind of Foundation series…it would be hard to do but, if done right, would be awesome
