Power season 4 episode 9 hype helps to boost ratings
Sunday night’s Power season 4 episode 9, arguably, the biggest episode of the season and maybe the series (which is really saying something, all things considered), managed to post a season high 1.9 million viewers in live+same-day measures. That is the show’s best performance since the season 3 finale last year, and it also goes to show that the leaks of the final episodes had no impact whatsoever on viewership. We’ve seen already this year that Game of Thrones found itself in a similar position — it broke at least one of its records for an episode that had leaked online days before it actually came out.
This Power rating also makes some sense when you consider the way in which the show can effectively hype itself up before its episode even airs. Starz allows subscribers to stream their shows early on the app, so it’s possible that (spoiler alert if you’re behind) some viewers saw the death of Raina St. Patrick early and convinced their friends to check out the episode live so they didn’t miss out on it. The fact that the show aired against Game of Thrones and still managed to perform as well as it did is impressive in its own right.
Do we expect to see Power crack the 2 million mark for the finale? It’d be wonderful, but also challenging given that it is also up against the Game of Thrones finale, and all expectations at the moment suggest that this is probably going to be one of the biggest episodes of the entire series over on HBO. So long as Power delivers a great finale, that’s really all that matters to us — it’s also worth remembering that the show has a season 5 renewal already, so it doesn’t even need to worry about viewership. That’ll be there for the show, so just deliver the best episode possible to get people psyched for what is coming up next.
