Why Broadchurch season 4 isn’t happening on BBC America, anywhere else
What’s the reason for no more Broadchurch? Well, much of it just comes down to the fact that creator Chris Chibnall, (plus the majority of the cast) seem to be ready to move on and do some other things. There’s no hurry for anyone to get back to the show … and there doesn’t seem to be much interest, either. Here is what Chibnall had to say on that subject in a BBC Radio 4 interview when the show was broadcasting back in the UK:
“That is it and there will be no more after this one, absolutely … It’s been an extraordinary journey with the show it has taken us all by surprise.”
It’s hard to imagine that there would even be a chance for the show to continue given that Chibnall is in the process of making Doctor Who now, and that’s basically a full-time job two or three times over. If you add to that another show like this, (one in which he writes every episode) it’s the sort of thing that would make your head explode.
Ultimately, here’s the good thing about British television: There are always other opportunities for the performers. While it may be super-sad to say goodbye to stars Olivia Colman and David Tennant within this context, one of the important things to remember here is that the two actors have plenty of other opportunities out there for them. Tennant is even going to be returning (in some capacity) for Jessica Jones season 2 on Netflix. That’s just a small gig, so he could return and do some more British series down the line. We just have to wait and see what else is out there for him.
Will there be similar shows like Broadchurch?
If you loved the first three seasons of this series, this is the biggest thing that we can tell you as encouragement: This is a genre that is going to keep going strong for a while to come. The anthology crime series is enormously popular, and there are so many other great ones out there if you found this one enjoyable. For example, Grantchester, although it may be a tad more procedural, is may still be very much up your alley. The first season of True Detective also had some similar elements. There are even some crime procedurals — such as TNT’s Major Crimes — that are in the process of shifting more to this format after previously being more procedural.
Even though Broadchurch is ending, its legacy will live on through some other series.
