Power season 4 episode 8 debate: Did Angela Valdez break bad?

Angela Valdez

While Power season 4 episode 8 featured many surprises, one of the biggest ones for our money was not who died. Instead, it was more how they died and how one Angela Valdez didn’t seem altogether upset over the fact that it happened.

As a matter of fact, her final words to Mike Sandoval in this episode — saying that his death was de facto revenge for Greg’s death — make you wonder how complicit she was in what happened. Did she know all along that we were going to see him killed at the end of the episode? It’s hard to necessarily think that Angela is clairvoyant.

Yet, Angela is an extremely smart woman who knows James St. Patrick better than anyone. She knows that he’s not an innocent man by any means, and there’s a reason that Felipe Lobos is gone off of the face of the earth. In turn, she had to know that once Jamie learned the truth about Mike being the mole that he was going to act, and he certainly didn’t do anything to stop it from happening.

Was this moment Angela breaking bad, and should she go out and find Walter White’s Winnebago next? Okay, maybe not, but it further shows that Lela Loren’s character is someone who has no problem towing the line between physical justice and justice through the court of law. Also, she has no problem pulling strings. She likely knew that John Mok would offer Mike something in return for him giving up other information, which meant that there would be no real justice for Greg. Jamie and Tommy organizing the kill through Tommy’s father was a way for something to happen without her getting any blood on her hands. Heck, she can feign ignorance in the event that there is some discussion that happens on this subject a little bit further down the road.

So where does this lead Angela? Well, we do think that it’s possible after this that she does somehow find her way back to Jamie, knowing now that she’s not so innocent and that they may have more in common than she was first inclined to say. We like the idea of them being involved in one another’s lives — whether or not they get romantically intertwined again remains to be seen (there are only two more episodes left this season), but their story is obviously far from over. We just have to wait and see exactly what’s going to be coming up with them in the future.

For now, we like Angela the most when she does run around in a morally gray area. Isn’t it more exciting than her being black and white about the rule of law?
