Doubt season 2 renewal: Why didn’t it happen for Katherine Heigl show?

Following tonight’s finale, it’s fair to wonder about a Doubt season 2 renewal — the sad reality is that there’s no hope for it.

The CBS series was basically canceled when it was removed from the schedule earlier this year after just a couple of episodes. There was a time in which there was hope for it to last for a little while, but it ultimately just struggled to find a consistent audience. Not even the magic of Dule Hill from Psych could make the show more successful than it was. The past several weeks CBS has used the show as a burn-off on Saturday nights — they’re giving viewers a chance to enjoy the rest of the show who were already immersed in the story without losing much in the way of network prime real estate.

Suffice it to say, it’d take more than a miracle for the show to come back.

Was there at one point a chance for there to be a future here? Absolutely. Earlier this year, we spoke with the show’s executive producer Tony Phelan alongside Heigl and confirmed that there were already talks about what season 2 would look like. Unfortunately, that was before the show actually premiered and everyone got a good sense of what the numbers were like. It was at that point that the nail starting to sink into the metaphorical coffin.

What is there to look forward to instead?

If you do enjoy Doubt and some of these performers, one of the primary things that we suggest for you is check out some of their other work. Laverne Cox is sensational on Orange is the New Black, while Heigl of course had many great seasons on Grey’s Anatomy before Izzie went off the rails. Meanwhile, Hill had Psych for eight seasons, and before that The West Wing. He’s now a key player in the latest season of Suits, just in case you want to see him tackle some legal drama during a night of the week that’s not Saturday.

We figure that Heigl will eventually land another role on a primetime series, though we’re not sure that it’ll be as a lead. We always wonder if there is a chance that Izzie could someday return to Grey’s, especially since she has shown an openness to doing it. That openness, however, has not been reflected in any comments from show creator Shonda Rhimes, which isn’t all that much of a shock based on how everything fell apart with Heigl on that show.

Unfortunately, this past year hasn’t been that great to legal dramas in general. Remember that in addition to what happened here, we also lost Chicago Justice to cancellation, as well.
