Hannibal season 4: Bryan Fuller says early talks happening
Hannibal fans, the good news is finally starting to come out two years after the series finale aired over on NBC! The show’s been in a holding pattern for a long time, but we are now at the very beginnings of what could be its future.
For those who love the show and haven’t kept up with some of the headlines around it, here’s what you need to know. NBC canceled the show in the summer of 2015, citing low ratings as the primary reason. From there, there was an effort to find the show a new home, but the problem was that Amazon held exclusive streaming rights — the didn’t give those up, but they also weren’t interested in reviving the show themselves. With that, we’ve been stuck in a holding pattern until this month, when those rights expired and offered up everyone a chance to look once more at all of the options out there. A new version of Hannibal could air anywhere, whether you are talking about a linear network or a streaming provider, and could continue the story upwards through The Silence of the Lambs.
Many diehard Hannibal fans are now aware of the fact that the two years have passed, which prompted showrunner Bryan Fuller to make it clear on Twitter that executive producer Martha De Laurentiis has started conversations to bring the show back. Ultimately, though, this is all they are right now: Conversations. We do think that there could be interested parties out there, but it’s hard to gauge who they would be or what they would want from the show.
What we can say with confidence is this: Any streaming provider who picks up the show is going to be inheriting one of the most passionate, loyal followings out there. Fannibal love runs deep, and there’s a reason why: This is a stellar series anchored by great performers (Hugh Dancy and Mads Mikkelsen leading the way) and smart writing. It’s also quite possibly one of the most visually-arresting shows that we’ve ever seen. Somehow, Hannibal found a way to make even the mundane into something horrifying, and they deserve all of the credit in the world for that.
Our dream list
Obviously, Netflix is the ideal home for almost anything these days and that has to be near the top of the food chain. Beyond that, Hulu is supportive of their original programming, and we do still think that the show could thrive on Starz given that they already have American Gods, which they made this year with Fuller and Michael Green. (By the way, American Gods is also fantastic and features one of the breakout performances of the year from Emily Browning.)
