Hawaii Five-0 season 8 spoilers: McGarrett’s getting a dog!
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, show executive producer Peter M. Lenkov confirmed that a new four-legged friend will be coming Steve’s way in the midst of a story about a dog who is in need of a new home:
“There is a story that’s coming up, it actually was Alex O’Loughlin’s idea … I wanted to do a story where the victim left in the wake of a tragedy was a dog who lost its owner. It’s a very emotional, really great story. It’s a dog that’s a drug sniffing service dog that McGarrett ends up adopting. It’s a really emotional journey, but it was his idea to keep the dog, and I thought that was a great one.”
McGarrett having a rescue dog is a great idea, and we say that even beyond the fact that we are huge animal lovers and have a rescue cat of our own. When you think about who Steve is as a person, he is in need of this sort of added companionship and could benefit very much from having a pet around. Also, it could help him feel a greater sense of hope of happiness in the midst of everything that he’s going through. Keep in mind that when season 8 of the show picks up, Steve will still be struggling with the fact that he has radiation poisoning. While Lenkov has already made it clear that he’s not planning to kill McGarrett off, the character is not omniscient! He can’t predict the future when it comes to this illness, but the doctor made it clear that it rarely ends well when it comes to radiation poisoning and it could be difficult for him to face. Anything that gives him hope and comfort is a good thing, especially since baring his soul is not exactly something that Steve is all that great at in the first place.
Obviously, the dog is not the most high-profile addition to the show this year, given that both Meaghan Rath and Beulah Koale are new series regulars while Ian Anthony Dale and others are being promoted. This is a show looking to bring some new flavor to the proceedings, but in the process we do feel as though the goal is still to capture the same soul and spirit that has been there since the beginning.
