Famous in Love season 2 renewal official; Bella Thorne series returning
Today, the cast of the Freeform series all congregated in order to deliver the super-great news. The second season of the show is going to be premiering at some point in 2018, so it should prove interesting to see what awaits Bella Thorne and the rest of the cast then.
When the first season ended, we were somewhat on the fence as to if the show (created by Pretty Little Liars showrunner I. Marlene King) would be back based on some of its ratings. It drew around a 0.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic and just over 300,000 viewers on average — that does put it on pair with another consistent bubble series in Stitchers, but you can argue that this show does have a bigger name in Thorne in the cast and also aired after Pretty Little Liars much of its first season.
However, there is another enormous caveat that you really have to remember here when discussing this show and its performance: The entire first season was available online in advance. Freeform tried something unique when it comes to Famous in Love to see if they could replicate the binge-watching model established by Netflix and Amazon while keeping the show on its linear schedule. It’s too early to know if such a model will be replicated again, but this renewal is proof that there is something in that idea that paid off for them. They got the viewership and the attention needed — including some Teen Choice Awards love — to bring the show back for more. With this strategy in mind, the live+same-day ratings are actually fairly solid.
We would imagine that season 2 would air in the spring based on the timing of the renewal announcement; we’ll have to wait and see just what Freeform decides to eventually pair with it. There should be more The Fosters and Shadowhunters back in the new year, but we’re still waiting on renewal decisions for some other shows, including The Bold Type and the aforementioned Stitchers. Those should come either a little bit later this summer or in early fall.
