Power season 4 casualty joins Jessica Jones season 2 for major role

Power season 4

One of the notable Power season 4 departures is thankfully not going to be unemployed for all that long. (Warning: There are some major spoilers ahead if you’re behind on the Starz drama. Read ahead with that knowledge!)

Still with us? Then read on for more…

As first reported by Entertainment Weekly, J.R. Ramirez (whose character of Julio was just killed off in a super-violent way on Power) is going to be a series regular on Jessica Jones season 2. The site describes his character of Oscar as “a devoted single father who moves into Jessica’s (Krysten Ritter) building as the new superintendent. While his young son becomes enamored with Jessica and her powers, Oscar keeps his distance, worrying about the trouble that follows people like her.”

What’s cool about this role on the surface is just that it feels so organic to what would happen in this sort of situation. Obviously, Oscar’s son would be super-excited about knowing someone with superpowers, even if it’s someone in Jessica with a certain reluctance towards actually them. He’s thinking through comic-book-goggles. Meanwhile, you have in turn someone in Oscar himself who simply knows better than to just get excited about knowing a superheroine. He’s been through more in life, and understands that with powers come problems — and he doesn’t want to expose his family to that when they’ve probably been through a lot already.

In a statement to the site about the role on the Netflix drama, executive producer Melissa Rosenberg offered up the following:

“J.R. is an incredible addition to our cast, bringing complex and subtle emotion and humor … He exudes warmth, edge and intelligence, and blends perfectly with our tone.”

In addition to his work on Power, Ramirez also had a role on Arrow as Ted Grant that was meant to be about the hero Wildcat — yet, it never really got to that point. We still consider this to be one of the biggest whiffs on that show just because they had such a talented guy in their midst. (We do still credit Ted Grant for helping to train Laurel Lance as she became Black Canary after the fact. Also, RIP Earth-1 Laurel Lance.)

New episodes of Power season 4 will continue airing on Starz Sunday nights. Unfortunately, you’ll be waiting a while still in order to see the premiere of Jessica Jones season 2 — think 2018 at the earliest. Before getting to that point, you have The Defenders coming up later this year. There are also additional seasons coming of Daredevil, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage, plus the spin-off all about Frank Castle/The Punisher. Netflix hasn’t gotten too specific just yet about the timing of any of this.

What do you think about this role for Ramirez?
